Who is at risk for head lice?
Anyone who has close contact with another person with head lice, or with contaminated clothing and other belongings, is at risk for head lice. Preschool and elementary school children, along with their families, are most often infested. Girls get head lice more often than boys, and women more than men. In the United States, African Americans rarely get head lice.
What is the best way to check for head lice?
Routinely check your child's head for head lice and nits. Part the hair all the way down to the scalp in very small sections, looking for both moving lice and nits. Look at the entire head this way. Look closely around the top of the neck and behind the ears, the most common locations for eggs. The main symptom is an itchy scalp from lice bites. The bits may appear red or crusty.

How did my daughter get head lice?
Children acquire them by coming into contact with an infected person. Contact is common when playing at school and at home (sleeping in other houses, sports activities, summer camps, and playgrounds). This contact can occur by wearing infested clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ties, or by using infested combs, brushes, or towels. Contact can also occur by lying on a bed, sofa, pillow, rug, or stuffed animal that has recently been in contact with an infected person.
My daughter wears her hair in braids. Can she still get head lice?
While wearing hair in braids or tied back can help, it won't prevent lice from crawling onto her hair. It could make it harder for the lice to stay on the head, but do not assume that wearing hair tied back or in braids will prevent anyone from getting lice.
If my child has short hair, can they still have head lice?
Yes, the length of hair does not matter. Anyone with hair can have lice or nits.
What do head lice look like?
Head lice are insects about the size of a sesame seed and may be clear, reddish brown, or black in color. Lice quickly flee from bright light. For this reason, it is usually easier to detect.
Can head lice be prevented?
